The Saltby Estate has a 20 year Woodland Management Plan agreed the Forestry Commission and supported by a 5 year programme of grant funding to improve the environmental condition of the woodlands. The funding is specifically focused at improvements which will benefit woodland bird species as these are a good indicator for overall woodland health. The ultimate aim of the management plan and grant package are to reach a point where the woodlands can be managed offering both economic and environmental sustainability.
Activities that are planned as part of the woodland portfolio are widening of rides to improve woodland habitat value, thinning of woodland blocks to allow further development of healthy and vigorous trees and some areas of new native woodland planting increasing the  total woodland cover on the estate. The woodlands are an integral element of the estate land holding and as such they require considered management to enable them to deliver the multitude of benefits they offer.
